From The East

Mike’s Garage by Todd M. Ebbert, WM
Recently, I decided to take an overnight trip to Clifty Falls State Park just outside of Madison, Indiana. With the truck packed with camping gear and a 95 lb German shepherd, I headed down one late morning. After stopping in a drug store in the town of Hanover for a few last minute items, I returned to a truck that would not start - flooded.

Just 10 mins from the entrance to the park and I was stranded. I waited nearly two hours and after several phone calls home, a dehydrated dog, a truck that would not start and the day growing late, I was out of options.

Back by the tail gate giving my dog much needed water, a local resident stopped and yelled “I see you are a traveler”, not catching on as I was a bit distracted I realized he was referring to my Masonic License Plate. He was quick to comment about my dog and a conversation quickly followed as if we were old friends. I mentioned my problem and he pointed to a garage hidden from view and gave me a ride to “Mike’s Garage”. The brother went into the garage and had a brief conversation with the owner. Out came a mechanic who drove me back to my truck and within 10 mins. had it running. This mechanic who was quick to give the grip refused payment, refused a tip but gave me his home phone number in case I had an after hours emergency and needed help again.

I attribute a successful camping trip to brothers who were willing to stop and help a distressed brother and treat him as an old friend. It is obvious now that having a Masonic License Plate really pays for it and is worth that nominal fee. If you are traveling near Madison and you need help, call a brother at Mike’s Garage.
